Military Response to Iranian Hostage Crisis

Picture
Jimmy Carter's initial response to the Iran Hostage Crisis was an oil embargo and other economic pressures towards Iran and the Middle East. He decided, at first, that military action was too much of a risk on the American's lives so the economic pressures continued. But after little success, Carter approved "Operation Eagle Claw" that would attempt to send in special forces to retrieve the remaining hostages. Unfortunatley, on April 245th the mission resulted in a tragic failure. Instead of meeting at the designated area of Desert One, three helicopters had serious malfunctions and another crashed while taking off. The disgraced mission ended the lives of eight servicemen and left the US government and military ashamed and ridiculed by Iranians and US citizens. (Kamps)

Since that fateful mission took place, the US military has taken special care to advance and perfect our nations special forces. For example, the highly regarded Seal Team Six was created in response to the Iran Hostage Crisis. Team Six is a highly classified counter terrorism and special missions unit known worldwide for its successful missions in defeating terrorism. Its beginnings can be traced back to the failing of Operation Eagle Claw and TAT (Terrorist Action Team) that was in charge during the crisis. Since then, US military made the decision that a special anti terrorism team was required for the country's safety to handle these kinds of crisi situations and thus came Team Six. One of the many accomplishments of Team Six was the recent execution of Osama Bin Laden in May of 2011.
